Review: Samsung Giorgio Armani mobile phone

In our video review of LG's Viewty phone we complained that the touchscreen device was too chunky and wished we could get our hands on a similar but smaller model.

Georgio Armani and the people at Samsung must have heard us because only days later came the new Armani phone. The Samsung Giorgio Armani has the same touchscreen interface as both the Viewty and the Apple iPhone but it is almost half the size and width of the Viewty.

Like that phone the Armani comes with photo-editing software, which lets users remove people or brighten colours, and although the 2.6in screen is smaller than the Viewty's we were impressed that we could see exactly what we were doing. We were also very impressed with the three-megapixel camera which, although it does not have face-recognition technology or an optical zoom, takes clear and bright shots.

It also comes with a range of picture-taking modes including a mosaic feature that takes shots in the shapes of stars and circles. Despite the phone being small, the screen is clear, but navigating around the phone's menus we came into a few problems. Like Armani's catwalk clothing, this designer phone appears to have been made for size zero models (or, specifically, size zero fingers).

Add to this the fact that the phone does not come with a stylus and will not recognise a tap with a fingernail and you often end up pressing unwanted buttons. The problem gets worse when trying to send text messages – it took us a frustrating eight attempts to write a standard 10-word text message and even longer to dial a number.

Navigating to options such as changing the clock's time was even worse and it didn’t help that it kept failing to detect our presses. However, those who only have an eye for looks won't be disappointed. The Armani phone is sleek, black and feather-light.

To make sure it is not ruined by scratches it also comes with a velvet pouch and a leather case to keep it safe, as well as headphones and a data cable that can be used to synchronise email and contacts from a computer. It also comes with a 1GB memory card, which, although easy to slide in, required tweezers to pull out.

Although this phone matches up to the Viewty and iPhone in terms of features and call quality, size isn't everything, and the quality of this phone doesn't match up.

Nokia launches TV-enabled 16GB N96

After leaked pics and spec have done the rounds on the Internet of late, Nokia has finally unveiled the Nokia N96, that, as with the N95, they insist on calling a "multimedia computer" rather than a phone.

The USP for the N96, aside from its general multi-tasking capabilities, is that it is "truly optimised for video and TV".

With a 2.8-inch screen, 16GB of internal memory and support for video in a wide range of formats, the dual-sliding N96 will offer a DVB-H TV tuner for live TV broadcasting in select markets.

The Nokia N96 supports common video formats including MPEG4, Windows Media Video and Flash, while transferring and accessing videos is fast with a USB 2.0 connection and WLAN and HSDPA support.

The storage capacity of the Nokia N96 can be further expanded with an optional microSD card, such as the new Nokia 8GB microSDHC card which increases the available memory of the Nokia N96 to an impressive total of 24GB.

In order for owners to best watch all that TV, the Nokia N96 features a "kickstand" on the back cover that allows for hands-free viewing.

The N96 also features media keys, a 3.5mm headphone connector and built-in 3D stereo speakers.

Orange plans DRM-free mobile music rentals

The UK branch of European cellular provider Orange hopes to have music rental services on its handsets without copy protection in as little as half a year, the company's music product director Brenda O’Connell says. Speaking at the MIDEM mobile conference, O'Connell explains that the digital rights management (DRM) that locks down tracks varies widely between computers and cellphones, making it all but impractical to have a unified but device-independent music service without removing DRM entirely.

"We’re... very concerned about the fact that customers are really rejecting DRM," the Orange official says. "We want to launch not only a la carte services but subscription-based services, rental models. DRM is what’s holding us back at this point."

O'Connell does not say how Orange would expect an unprotected rental service to work through conventional means, as the concept would expose any temporary files to illegal copying while they exist on the handset. One proposal, however, would see all content stored on Orange servers, allowing users to stream the music as often as they like while in range of a 3G wireless connection.

Omnifone's MusicStation service uses a similar concept today but uses protect files on the customer's phone as a form of local cache that permits listening to some music when the cellular link is switched off.

Regardless of implementation, Orange content senior VP Herve Payan believes his firm should have all major labels onboard for the concept "in the next six months," but that only about 100 handsets available in the world today would be technically capable of supporting such a service. None of these have been named so far.

Separately, Payan also describes recent decisions with specific handset makers and notes that Orange agreed to unlimited data plans for Apple's iPhone in part because of its automatic bridging between EDGE cellular data and Wi-Fi, which makes a data cap impractical. "It is very important to have not just an iPhone but unlimited data because the device goes from mobile to Wi-Fi without telling you - if you don’t have an unlimited data subscription the bill can be quite costly," he says.

The executive also notes that Orange is not averse to maintaining separate, copy-protected stores such as Nokia's Music Store at the same time. The carrier is in talks with Nokia to ensure that the store is an option but is clearly separate from whatever Orange offers, Payan adds.
